the inside of the helmet can tell a lot.....stickers that may be there...ect....also hold the helmet up in the light and move at angles to see if you can see any glue residue where the number may have been.....i have seen helmets where you can tell the numbers that were originally on it by doing this.

Thanks for the info. I did the light trick, and it looks like another 4 was on the left side. I wonder if this could be a j.c. Copleland helmet. Its an identical helmet to the one he wears.

I also pulled back the padding on the inside of the helmet and found 44 near the ear piece in an old school label maker strip. I'm really believing that this is copelands helmet. Is there any way to find out for sure?

Did you get it from chucks? I thought I remembered him trying to sell that practice jersey for the longest time.
